Setting high standards in technique with a deep focus on research and richness in ideas, artist Nguyễn Thọ Hiếu (born in 1988) contributes to the art scene a sentimental, dreamy, nostalgic, and thoughtful perspective. He explores and pursues the multi-layered oil painting technique from European Old Masters, finding joy in every new painting experience and dedicating considerable time to meticulously describe each small detail in a whole influenced by various factors. Combining a romantic and classical realistic drawing style, the artist casts a spotlight on a surreal realm of consciousness. Here, character images (often friends or the family of the artist) are placed in a dreamy space, harmonizing with symbols of religion, Oriental culture, hobbies, and ancient philosophies.

The exhibition "Side by Side" by artist Nguyễn Thọ Hiếu comprises 15 works created from February 2020 to January 2024. Over the years, the series acts as a diary of the artist’s practice in painting. Along a linear timeline, the artworks progress from the simple and humble beauty of a child, undergo changes, move into adolescence, and start approaching the more chaotic and multifaceted aspects of life. The artist places belief in purity and innocence (expressed through the image of his daughter), contrasting with the complexities of human existence and judgment, and above all, he emphasizes the observation of the inner inherent order formed by numerous elements surrounding the life context of each person, seeking the ego within.

“Side by Side" not only encapsulates the connection between the artist and the characters but also, on a broader level, this concept implies the coexistence of introspection and ongoing life within each individual!
