Doan Van Toi (b. 1989, Hai Phong) currently lives and works in Hanoi. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from Vietnam University of Fine Arts in 2017.

In his painting practice, Doan Van Toi works across a range of materials, from watercolour and silk to oil and lacquer. In recent years, he has been devoted mainly to silk painting and conceptual experiments that incorporate silk as an essential participant. Through arranging materials such as silk, fabric, embroidery thread, and watercolour across two surfaces, layering and interweaving them, he approaches art-making as a form of mindfulness practice. From solitary subjects like zebras and portraits to family groupings inspired by photographs of relatives and rendered through floral motifs, the artist guides the viewer toward recognising the interrelationship of all beings in nature. These works form a path through which Doan Van Toi invites the viewer to return to the present moment and seek inner peace.
