Artist Ly Truc Son was born in 1949 in Thua Thien Hue, Vietnam, into an intellectual family. He graduated from the Vietnam University of Fine Arts in 1979 and later taught there. He was also a recipient of a French government scholarship at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and spent nearly a decade living and working in Europe between 1989 and 1998.

The works selected for this exhibition were created predominantly in 2024, marking a steady continuum in his practice after years of experimentation in search of new materials and modes of expression that build on his achievements with lacquer and Dó paper. This process has opened for him a field of creativity where the spirit of Western art (from pre-Renaissance sensibilities to the minimalist and abstract explorations of Tàpies, Rothko, Giacometti, and Uecker) develops in dialogue with Eastern cultural lineages› (including folk aesthetics, Ly-Tran visual traditions), and the raw tactility of earth, stone, sand, and plant matter.

In this convergence, each work reflects not only the artist’s aspiration to pursue an abstract language shaped by layered cultural inheritances, but also stands as a meditative space in itself. For viewers, the starting point in approaching abstraction need not lie in deciphering form, but rather in allowing the unconscious to lead the way. It is within this quiet inner movement that Ly Truc Son’s creative process takes shape and quietly expands outward
