Tran Hoang Son
Tran Hoang Son (b. 1972) graduated from Vietnam University of Fine Arts, where he currently serves as Head of Painting Department. With nearly 3 decades of artistic practice and teaching, he has worked across a range of materials and forms of expression, including lacquer, Dó paper, silk, and installation art.
“In a shared world” presents a selection of Tran Hoang Son’s works created from 2020 till now. Centered on a meditative sensibility, the works draw upon the cultural heritage of communal houses and pagodas, as well as Buddhist iconography, including Arhat figures, mudras, and lotus flowers. The recurring motif of half-closed eyes evokes a state of inward contemplation, suggesting a quiet turning toward the self. In conjunction with imagery drawn from nature, these figures further evoke the Buddhist-inflected philosophy of the oneness of all things, in which humanity and the natural world coexist within a shared realm of repose.
Through a moderate visual language, Tran Hoang Son constructs an allusive, timeless space that brings the contemporary spirit into dialogue with sensibilities of traditional Vietnamese art. This convergence suggests a borderless reconciliation between the secular realm of everyday life and the enduring depths of cultural and spiritual heritage.
His works are held in the collections of the Vietnam National Fine Arts Museum, Umeå Academy of Fine Arts (Sweden), and are represented in numerous private collections across Vietnam, Laos, Hong Kong, mainland China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Switzerland.
